He was 82 years old.
He died at a hospital in Belleville, New Jersey, Variety reports, citing the late Cantor’s widow, Cathy Lawrence.
For 30 years he wrote music for the children’s television show Sesame Street, for which he wrote more than three hundred songs and for which he won three Emmy Awards.
Lawrence also composed the soundtracks for the romantic melodrama “Sooner or Later,” the film “Beat the Drum Slowly,” and the HBO musical “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” based on the book by Beatrix Potter. From 2003 until his death he worked as a conductor at Stamford Synagogue.
